Volunteer Sharie with Sophie, to the vet

Sophie's New Life or "I Get By With A Little Help From My Friends"

Sophie, a shar pei/boxer mix, lives in the Glen Villa RV Park in Glendale. Her guardian, Thomas Miranda, decided to spay Sophie. He made two appointments last winter. We issued vouchers. Both times, he became quite ill and was not able to take Sophie in. then, the boy next door, a chocolate lab named Magnum, began dating Sophie. Sophie‘s puppies were born under the kitchen table, and Thomas struggled to help raise them. Meanwhile, Magnum-with Toby help-was neutered.

Thomas was able to find homes for the pups, although he kept one cutie named Dagger.
Once Sophie had weaned her pups, Thomas called The Toby Fund. We decided to offer substantial help, Sophie needed to be spayed. Volunteers Sharie Andrews and Kathy Oxendine made sure Sophie got a ride to Riverside Park Veterinary Clinic. Not only was she spayed, but a donor funded vaccinations
and a new, fancy collar. We visited Sophie recently to take a photo of Thomas’ happy, lady dog. “I am ecstatic,” said Thomas. Just a little help from Toby Friends, and a guardian who had the wisdom to ask, gave Sophie a new, peaceful life. (Very few pups find life-long, loving homes. Love your dog! spay/neuter.

Sweetie Pie

Tiny Treasure Of Sunny Valley
Zinna Smalley glows when she speaks of her pet
rat, Sweetie Pie; so, we couldn’t resist an interview
with Zinna and Sweetie. They live in a trailer in a
beautiful, remote meadow in Sunny Valley. Retired
and disabled, Zinna found she could no longer handle
larger companion animals like dogs. She adopted According to Zinna, rats become more affectionate as they age.
At a year old (most live for 2 to 3 years),
Sweetie shows affection as she licks or holds onto
Zinna’s fingers “…like a dog.”

And, life wouldn’t be complete without sports and exercise, so Sweetie and Zinna play boxing, Zinna using her fingers and Sweetie using her legs. When asked about Sweetie’s favorite foods, Zinna revealed her rat companion “eats everything I do, but especially loves salads with bananas or dried fruit for dessert.” Sweetie Pie is also a bit fussy about cleanliness. In her cage are cushions, of course, with a little “bedroom” where she curls up and naps. Zinna says because Sweetie initially lived in a pet store, she is still nervous sometimes and wets her bedding. When she does, Sweetie removes the tissue on her bed so Zinna can replace it. An active and charismatic rat, Sweetie loves to pose for photos

Most people see rats as “just rats” as though they are lower beings. Sweetie Pie, however, is “a little person” with intelligence and feelings. Sweetie Pie gives Zinna such great joy. You see, the tiniest among us, with love and care, may become true treasures of the heart.

Dr. Elizabeth Kraft and Assistant Cienna examining Sunshine the Chicken

Fourth Animal Wellness Clinic Serves 38 Animals!
34 Dogs, 3 Cats, And Sunshine The Chicken!

Wolf Creek Animal Wellness Clinics are Toby Fund originals! The Clinic held Sept. 11th. was our fourth, serving 38 animals. Dr. Elizabeth Kraft’s mobile veterinary hospital—The Critter Cruiser—parked in the Post Office lot all day as folks arrived with animal companions. Dr. Kraft and her assistants, Cienna Corley and Jaclyn Ross, were busy with check-ups, vaccinations, and at times diagnosing and
treating ailments.

Puk, puk, puk…down Main St. to the Critter Cruiser came Shannon Peterson, mom to three children,
two dogs and one chicken named Sunshine. In a carrier, Sunshine was a bit frightened, but relaxed once in Dr. Kraft’s care. Turns out Sunshine clung to Shannon a lot, was picked on by their other chickens, and walked with feet pointed in. Dr. Kraft determined Sunshine had some ligament damage, but if Shannon could protect her she would have a good life. “She’s a nice chicken,” the doctor commented, and Shannon agreed to continue to love this little brown feathery creature who enjoys eating meals with the family dogs.

Dr. G. Holds Ginger at the Clinic

Fifth Annual Clinic Serves 40 Dogs and Cats

Our Fifth Annual Wolf Creek Animal Wellness Clinic took place Sept. 11, ’11, with Dr. Goutam Mukherjee (“Dr. G.”) and his assistant, Julie Bjorland providing care for the animals. Julie later wrote, of all the clinics they had done “…this was the most organized, well-run clinic I ever participated in.” Dr. G. commented that all the animal guardians were grateful for the clinic. “I cannot count how many folks thanked us again and again for being there to take care of their pets.” He added, “We had a good time. All the animals were well-behaved.” Wolf Creek resident Mike Creed said, “Dr. G. is wonderful. I am very happy. I couldn’t have afforded to bring my dogs to a vet without this help. The clinic is a great service to the community.” This was our largest clinic, serving 40 dogs and cats (no chickens this year, but we hope for some next time around!).
